Published Sources on Medieval Lisbon
Published Sources on Medieval Lisbon is a database that aims to gather, process and make available, in a systematic and standardized way, the published documentation related to Medieval Lisbon (1147-1521), which until now has been scattered throughout different documentary collections. For each diploma, an attempt has been made to carefully summarize its content, ascertain the chronology of its production, indicate archival catalog references or places of publication, identify the respective actors - from the entities that produced or received the documents to the powers that intersect in them or those who appear recorded as witnesses to the act that is listed - as well all available data on the place of its production, thus allowing a more in- depth study of its relationship with the urban topography.
As part of the IEM's long-standing research work on the study of medieval Lisbon, this database makes available to a wider public an important set of documentary resources in order to increase the quality of studies on the city of Lisbon in the medieval period. The involvement of students from undergraduate, master's and doctoral courses in History, under the guidance of the coordinator, has also helped consolidate a strategy of raising awareness and training a new generation of researchers in the issues associated with the study of medieval times and its urban universe.
The continuity of the work already done and the welcome reception of contributions from its users make this database a work tool that is constantly being updated, with a view to gradually increasing the number of records made available and broadening the documentary collections listed. For this reason, the date of its last update will always be indicated on this page.

Criteria:
The researchers responsible chose to prioritise, among the collections containing documents of interest for the study of medieval Lisbon, the record books of the royal chancelleries in Portuguese already published (Chancelleries of D. Afonso IV, D. Pedro, D. João I and D. Duarte) and to the documents transcribed in the inventory of the Torre do Tombo ‘Gavetas’ collection. The greater uniformity of of documents contained therein, most of which are associated with the exercise of royal power, and the more manageable volume of diplomatic production was better suited to the duration of the research initiation grants and the time set for the curricular units within which some students collaborated in the project.
The records were entered into the database by undergraduate, master's and doctoral History students at NOVA FCSH, in accordance with the respective protocols and under the guidance of the coordinator.
The search tools made available enable optimisation and diversification of possibilities for searching the census collection and the cross-referencing of the information contained in each document, the date of production, and the individual actors concerned - producers, recipients, scribes, and witnesses - as well as the exact place or places of publication of each document and the archival catalog number of the respective handwritten testimonies. This latter element will also allow the user to search for documents listed on other platforms and sites, such as DIGITARQ, which already provide digital reproductions of medieval documentation. In all cases, the database search form will allow you to retrieve all the information for each record. The explanatory buttons that are provided are designed to clarify how each search-field works and to help optimise the searches made.
