OFFIPER

Online dictionary of the crown's peripheral officialdom (14th-15th centuries)

The online dictionary of the crown's peripheral officialdom (14th-15th centuries) is a database created with the aim of systematically making available details of the holders of royal positions, at local and regional level, who exercised military, clerical, judicial
and treasury functions. The aim was to identify a wide range of positions within this typology, record their posts and gradually analyse the construction of the administrative divisions implemented by the Portuguese monarchy in the latter Middle Ages.
This database is the result of an internal IEM project called OFIPER (PERIPHERAL OFFICIALS OF THE CROWN IN THE KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL - 14th-15th centuries), linked to the training programme offered by the Institute as part of the Atelier de Iniciação à Investigação em Estudos Medievais (1st cycle curricular unit). This project served as a vehicle for incorporating students from the FCSH and, in 2013/2014, also from the Universidade Aberta (the latter in a non-accredited training programme) into
research in Medieval History.

Database compilers:
2011-2012 academic year - Gonçalo Melo da Silva (master's student), Diogo Gomes, Frederico Pinto, Joaquim Gafeira and Patrícia Costa (undergraduate students).
2012-2013 academic year - Diana Martins, Lia Fernandes, Pedro Silva Rei, Tomás de Albuquerque Costa (undergraduate students).
2013-2014 academic year - Nuno Ivo; Carlos Serejo (undergraduate students).

Criteria:
The online dictionary of peripheral crown officials (14th and 15th centuries) is a prosopographical database. Since there are numerous sources of information on these individuals, the initial decision was to analyze the published compilations of documents
from the Royal Chancellery for the period in question. However, the database can continue to receive new entries and, once the data is validated, it will be published as open content in this space.

The database consists of a main table for each individual, including differentiating elements such as name, place of birth, and an array of distinguishing observations.
Various secondary tables provide information characterizing the individual in terms of public life, education, heritage, and network of personal relationships.
The protocol for filling in the form is attached.

JUSCOM

Justice and communities in a time of transition (1481-1580)

JUSCOM - Justice and communities in a time of transition (1481-1580) is a prosopographical database of judges appointed by the crown during the reigns of King João II to King Sebastião, identifying them and detailing their careers. The database thus provides information on the personnel embodying the evolution of the crown's peripheral judicial apparatus (in terms of the exercise of justice at first instance). The information was collected from the records of the Royal Chancelleries, the Corpo Cronológico (Chronological Corpus) and the Gavetas of the Torre do Tombo.
The database comprises a main table for each individual, including differentiating elements such as name, place of birth, and distinguishing observations. Various secondary tables provide information on the individual in terms of public life, education, heritage and network of personal relationships.
The protocol for filling in the form is very similar to that of the OFIPER database
